Atlanta, GA — Production is underway on The Space Between, a narrative short film written by Indra Dattagupta, exploring the quiet emotional terrain between motherhood, loss, and unexpected human connection.
Set over the course of a single spring afternoon in a neighborhood park, The Space Between follows two women whose lives briefly intersect. One is an exhausted pregnant mother juggling her young twins; the other, a career professional, has just received the devastating news that her IVF treatment has failed. As the women observe one another from a park bench, a small moment involving one of the children creates an unspoken bond—revealing the complex, often contradictory realities of modern womanhood.
Through restrained dialogue and visual storytelling, the film examines themes of fertility, longing, resilience, and empathy. By focusing on a fleeting encounter between strangers, The Space Between reflects on how shared vulnerability can bridge vastly different life experiences.
Writer Indra Dattagupta, a former technology professional storyteller, has been developing character-driven stories for film and television for the past five years. Drawing from her experiences living across cultures, her work often explores family dynamics and the intersection of Eastern and Western values. The Space Between continues her interest in intimate stories that illuminate the emotional lives of women.
“The film looks at the invisible spaces women inhabit—the space between expectation and
reality, between grief and hope,” says Dattagupta. “Sometimes the most profound moments of understanding happen in silence, between strangers who may never meet again.”
Currently in production, The Space Between is expected to begin its international festival run upon completion.
