Atlanta, GA — Production has begun on The Space Between, a poignant new short film written by Indra Dattagupta. Set against the gentle backdrop of a neighborhood park, the film explores the emotional distance—and surprising connection—between two women whose lives appear vastly different but are united by a shared longing.
The Space Between unfolds during a quiet spring afternoon when a visibly pregnant mother juggling twin boys briefly crosses paths with a career-driven woman who has just received devastating news: her IVF treatment has failed. What begins as an incidental encounter evolves into a subtle, wordless exchange of empathy and understanding, revealing the universal complexities of motherhood—both realized and hoped for.
Through restrained dialogue and visual storytelling, the film examines themes of fertility, exhaustion, resilience, and the quiet grace of women supporting one another in unexpected ways. The story highlights how fleeting moments between strangers can become deeply meaningful, reminding us that compassion often exists in the smallest gestures.
Writer Indra Dattagupta, a former technology professional turned storyteller, brings a deeply personal and culturally layered perspective to the project. Her work frequently explores family relationships, immigrant experiences, and the intersection of Eastern and Western values.
“The Space Between is about the silent spaces women carry within them—the gap between expectation and reality, longing and acceptance,” says Dattagupta. “Sometimes the most profound understanding happens without words, in the briefest encounters between strangers.”
The film is currently in production and will be submitted to international film festivals upon completion.
The Space Between continues Dattagupta’s exploration of emotionally resonant storytelling that centers women’s lived experiences and the quiet moments that define human connection.
